Important things to remember:- The first thing to remember about 8 bolt bird cage timing is the bird cage is highly dependant on the rear end tube installation. Because the bird cage bolts to the end of the rear end tube, the timing of the tube has an adverse effect on the timing of the bird cage. The bird cage installation is a lot easier in this case.
- Smart tube rear end ends are less dependant on tube installations, but the bird cage installation is more complex.
- Ensure that you are using a quality angle finding device. A digital smart level is the best way to measure an angle. The rotary style angle finders from your local hardware store may not be accurate enough to measure the difference between 0 and 5 degrees.
8 BOLT REAR END| 1. | Install the bird cages and spindles on the rear end. | | 2. | Set up rear end as normal. Put rear end on set up blocks. | | |  | | 3. | At this point, be sure the chassis is level. This is a step that is commonly overlooked. | | 4. | At this point, you can check the bird cage timing. Place the angle finder on the bottom of the bird cage. | | 5. | At this point, if the bird cage is out of time, one of 2 things need to happen. Either the rear end tube needs to be re-timed, or the 4 bolt to 8 bolt cup needs to be changed. A blank cup can be purchased, but the holes will have to be drilled. | | 6. | This diagram shows a right rear bird cage and how it should be timed. | | 7. | The yellow line indicates the center line of rear end tube. | | 8. | The blue line indicates the BRP 426 torque arm bird cage angle. It should be between 0 and 4 degrees positive, with 2 degrees positive being optimal. | | 9. | The white line indicates the BRP 432 torque arm bird cage angle. It should be between 2 degrees negative, and 2 degrees positive, with 0 degrees being optimal. | | 10. | See figure 2 for more information about positive and negative birdcage timing. |
SMART TUBE REAR END
| 1. | The first step in timing a smart tube birdcage is to put the bird cages on the tubes, put the radius rods on, and install hubs and calipers. This will place the bird cage left to right on the tube. Use the calipers and rotors to center the bird cages on the tubes. Don't worry too much about getting the bird cages in the right timing, we will deal with this later. | | 2. | Snug the bird cages up a little using the pinch bolts on the backside of the bird cage. Do not too much as you will need to loosen them when you go to time them. | | 3. | Next, center the rear end left to right as per set up procedures. | | 4. | Square the rear end as per normal set up procedures. | | 5. | Make sure chassis is level at this point. This is a step that is often overlooked! | | 6. | Start on the left rear, put the angle finder on the top of the bird cage. Loosen pinch bolts and time bird cage to 2 degrees positive. Tighten pinch bolts. | | |  | | 7. | Re-adjust left rear radius rod to make rear end square. BE SURE TO DOUBLE CHECK TIMING! | | 8. | At this point, time the right rear. Loosen pinch bolt, and put the angle finder on the top of the bird cage. Time the bird cage to 2 degrees positive. Tighten pinch bolts. | | 9. | Re-adjust right rear radius rod to make rear end square. BE SURE TO DOUBLE CHECK TIMING! | | 10. | At this point, the torsion arms should line up in the center of the bird cages. Double check everything before drilling! | | 11. | After everything has checked out okay, Drill the holes in the tubes to 7/16" and install bolts. Be sure to tighten pinch bolts. |
