Brake Balance Bar Set-Up PDF Print E-mail
1. Brake Balance Photo 1Assemble Master Cylinders before installing on the balance bar. (Click images to enlarge)
2. Brake Balance Photo 2Thread bottom master cylinder (7/8" rear master) into the balance bar clevis. For Wilwood balance bar, screw the master cylinder into the clevis until there is approximately 1/8" to 1/4" of thread sticking through the inside of the clevis.
3. Brake Balance Photo 3Tighten nuts on the bottom master cylinder to secure. Tighten jam nut against clevis.
4.

Next, ensure there is a 1/4” of play in the balance bar itself. The large washers between the clevises and the pivot should be loose! Set the clearance by screwing or unscrewing the top clevis up the balance bar. This is very important to ensure that maximum balance bar travel is obtained, and also to make sure the balance bar doesn’t bind as it goes through its travel.

5. Brake Balance Photo 5Thread top master cylinder (1” front master) into top clevis. Secure this master, but leave the jam nut loose. This master will be adjusted after the brakes have been bled.
6. Brake Balance Photo 6Run balance bar to bottom of its travel, and install knob. Use red loctite to ensure the knob will not fall off.
7. At this point, ensure the balance bar has maximum travel. From top to bottom, the balance bar should have approximately 21 to 22 turns.
8. After the brakes have been bled, the top master cylinder can be adjusted. With the brake pedal depressed, the balance bar has to be level. Adjust the top master cylinder by threading the master cylinder into or out of the clevis until the balance bar is level when depressed. This is important as it makes sure there is even force on both master cylinders. When the pedal is in the relaxed position, the balance bar may be “cocked”. This is okay.

9. Jam down top master cylinder.

Brake Tips

  1. Ensure bleed screws in calipers are pointed straight up while bleeding. This will ensure there are no air pockets get trapped in calipers.
  2. Always use a high quality fluid.
  3. Never mix different types of fluids. Different types or even brands can react with each other and gel up.
  4. Always ensure master cylinders fully retract. This will minimize wear and heat.
  5. Ensure the balance bar has maximum travel. It should have between 21 and turns.
